CHICAGO, July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Jacob Freeman, a record-setting hammer thrower and outstanding shot putter from Warwick (RI) Bishop Hendricken HS, and Stacy Martin of Elletsville (IN) Edgewood HS, a national leader in both the shot put and discus throw, were today named the Gatorade(R) Circle of Champions National High School Boys and Girls National High School Track & Field Athletes of the Year by The Gatorade Company and Scholastic Coach & Athletic Director magazine.

The national award, which is based on an athlete's overall athletic and academic performance throughout her high school career, distinguishes Freeman and Martin as the best high school track & field athletes in the nation. The selection was made by the Gatorade National Advisory Board, comprised of 10 national and regional sports journalists. They were selected from nearly 900,000 male and female track & field athletes nationwide.

Freeman shattered the national high school hammer throw record. His heave of 253' 3" surpassed the old mark by more than 22 feet (231 feet), which had stood for 23 years. He had four other throws of 250 feet or more and 20 over the old national record! And, not incidentally, he also won the state shot put title. Jacob is equally impressive off the track. He owns a 2.92 GPA and an 1170 score on the SAT. He also serves his community by volunteering at local nursing homes, for Christmas in April (students fix up neighborhood homes), town beach clean-up, and in local little leagues.

Martin dominated the competition throughout her Hoosier career. Her 49' 7" shot put was three feet better than the former state record. Even more impressive, she set a new state record of 165' 4" in the discus, breaking the former mark by nearly 11 feet (154'5"). Her off-field performance was of record caliber too. Her 3.9 GPA placed her in the top five of her graduating class and she scored better than 1100 on the SAT. She leads by example at school as a member of the National Honor Society, Youth in Action, and The Latin Club. The Indiana role model will take her talents to Auburn in the fall.

The Gatorade National High School Boys' and Girls' Track & Field award, which began in 1986, has been given to some of the biggest names in the sport. The lists of past national winners include:
