LA PORTE, Tex., July 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Honoring the nation's elite high school athletes for 18 years, Gatorade(R) Thirst Quencher, in partnership with Scholastic Coach & Athletic Director magazine, today announced Kerron Clement of La Porte High School in La Porte, Texas, as the 2003 Gatorade National High School Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year. The award, which recognizes athletic achievement and overall character, distinguishes Kerron as the nation's best high school track & field athlete.
Kerron finished the season ranked No. 1 in the nation in both the 300 meter (35.42) and 400 meter (50.56) intermediate hurdles. Kerron also logged the top indoor time in the 60 meter hurdles (7.84) among high schoolers and is ranked second in the 110 meter high hurdles (13.52). His mark of 35.42 in the 300 meter intermediate hurdles is the third fastest time ever recorded by a high school athlete in the event.
Kerron finished his senior year by winning the 300 meter intermediate hurdles at the Texas 5A state track meet for a second consecutive year. He was also victorious this season in the 400 meter intermediate hurdles at the adidas Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
"Kerron is the most responsible and dedicated athlete I have ever coached," said La Porte hurdles coach Chester Vlasek. "His fine character and personality make him a true prototype of a champion."
Kerron maintains a 3.8 GPA. He will attend the University of Florida in the fall.
The 2003 Gatorade National Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year selection was made by the Gatorade National Advisory Board, comprised of 10 sportswriters and sport-specific experts, who collected nominations from all over the country. Kerron was selected from more than 494,000 male high school track & field athletes nationwide.
"We believe that true success in high school athletics is predicated upon more than just accomplishments on the field of play," said Gatorade Vice President of Sports Marketing Tom Fox. "While Gatorade athletes are the best in their sports, being a winner also means having strong character, demonstrating leadership, and caring as much about test scores as game scores. Kerron is a shining example of the positive role sports can play in a teenager's life."
